Cubic Feet Guide for Refrigerator Sizes
Refrigerator capacity is measured in cubic feet (ft³). The number refers to the internal usable volume, not the external dimensions.
Refrigerator Sizes by Type
| Type | Capacity (ft³) | Width | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini fridge | 1.7–4.5 | 18–24” | Dorm rooms, offices |
| Top-freezer | 14–22 | 28–32” | Budget-friendly, small kitchens |
| Bottom-freezer | 18–25 | 29–33” | Frequent fridge access |
| Side-by-side | 22–28 | 32–36” | Narrow spaces |
| French door | 20–30 | 30–36” | Large families |
How to Measure Refrigerator Space
Measure the width, depth, and height of the opening in inches. Convert to feet by dividing each by 12. Multiply for cubic feet.
Example: Opening measures 36” wide × 30” deep × 70” tall.
- 36 ÷ 12 = 3 ft
- 30 ÷ 12 = 2.5 ft
- 70 ÷ 12 = 5.83 ft
- Volume = 3 × 2.5 × 5.83 = 43.75 ft³ of available space
Leave at least 1 inch clearance on each side and 2 inches at the top for ventilation.
Average Household Needs
- 1–2 people: 12–16 ft³
- 3–4 people: 18–22 ft³
- 5+ people: 22–30 ft³
A good rule: plan 4–6 cubic feet per person in the household.
